Parameters governing systems designs today

In this article , I would like to discuss a set of parameters which are governing our life today and hence influence systems designs as well.

Let us understand “Systems” in this world will reflects the reality in this world and will continuously keep evolving to cater to what we (Human Beings) as users demand from them.

These parameters can also be used for evaluating systems design as well.

With the average earning capability of an individual increasing by a great factor, we today are willing to spend a good amount of money for various products available in the market.

First ask yourself as you are willing so spend any amount of money for a product …. will you ever want to use a system which is difficult t use or which is complex to use?

The usual tendency of a person is when I am throwing in the money, why should I use a system which is complex to use? …

This is where Usability comes in … and is one of the very important parameter which can influence your system design.

Second ask yourself “Is there anyone who would want to use a slow performing system?”

I feel the question is self explanatory … we are living in the world of “ASAP” wherein we want every thing ASAP. Given this fact no one will tolerate a slow performing system.

This is where PERFORMANCE becomes the next important parameter influencing system designs.

To understand the next very important parameter…

Today if I go to any youngster and say “Here is a cell phone that will take care of all your needs for the next 20 years and you will have to use it for the next 20 years”… the usual answer that I will get from that youngster is “I don’t want it”

I go to any youngster and say “Here is a Car that will take care of all your needs for the next 20 years and you will have to use it for the next 20 years”… the usual answer that I will get from that youngster is “I don’t want it”

The same thing applies to your TV, IPODs, laptops, jobs, girlfriends, boy friends etc. I hope you will realize one of the very important parameters which drives the younger generation is CHANGE …

Youngsters are so used to changing our mobile phones, ipods, laptops , bikes , cars, jobs, life partners… that they get bored after using a particular system for some amount of time and change the same even if it works perfectly fine.

The parameter I am talking about is FLEXIBILTY, Flexibility has become one of the very important parameters within systems.

The article “Why do people prefer SMSs and Emails over telephone calls?” explains the importance of FLEXIBILITY in system designs.

As people are very particular about their ….privacy and security… SECURITY is the next important parameters that systems have to consider.

The last parameter is ACCOUNTABILITY .

I just want to highlight that most of the parameters which are governing systems today are enforced by the actual users of these systems. Systems are forced to incorporate these parameters because we as human beings demand the same from these systems.

This will also explain why “MVC” is a fundamental design style used by majority of the systems in this world.
