Which product should I buy?

In this topic we will discuss some important characteristics of a well designed system which makes us prefer one system over the others thereby resulting in the purchase of the system.

For better understanding, let's take an example.

I am in need of a new mobile phone and so I go to a mobile phone outlet to purchase a new handset.

The moment I enter the outlet, the sales guy asks me the price range that I am looking out for. He tries to find out my budget.

Once I tell him the price range that I can afford, he displays a number of Mobile phone handsets from different brands like Nokia, Motorola, Sony, etc.

Now, the Mobile phone handsets that the sales guy shows me are all in the same price range and almost all of them offered the same features.

Please understand that today, we are in a highly competitive market where in for every product there will be more than one option available. There will be many products in the same price range and same features competing for the "Shelf space".

This is true for all types of products. Be it a car, laptop, soap, chocolates etc.

So if I have multiple products within a category with nearly the same cost and features, then

Which one should I buy?

What will influence my purchase decision to go with a particular brand?

If I have to choose between brands, I will evaluate the products on the following parameters.

  • Ease of Use/Usability.
  • Performance, Flexibility, Reliability, Availability, Serviceability
  • Quality
  • Brand Name, etc.

I would look at the above parameters. I am sure with a little addition here and there; even you would do the same.

All the parameters mentioned above are the Non-functional characteristics of a system and they are ones that influence our decision of going with a particular product.

So, today when we buy any product from any vendor, it is the Non-Functional characteristics of that product that influence our decision.

A Product that satisfies all the functional features need not necessarily be a success in the market. It is only a prerequisite. It is a necessity.

In other words "The success or failure of a product today is determined by the fact as to how closely the product meets the non- functional expectations or requirements of the user".
